Since 2021, when my county awarded Ryland the residential garbage pick-up contract, I have had no problems with this service.  But, as I explained while calling Ryland to complain today, suddenly (and for the last three weeks in a row), I've had to pick my own garbage up off the dirt road in front of my residence after each garbage pick-up.

In response, the Ryland Rep insisted that I must "bag" my garbage, but that's just silly and pollutively wasteful.  I've never had to do that in the past, and our environment certainly does NOT need more plastic in our waste stream (I'm already bringing canvas shopping bags to the grocery store, etc.; isn't this what we're teaching our kids?).

This problem evidently stems from a waste-truck design flaw that's arisen from shifting from human labor to a truck-based, vertical hoist-and-empty process (yet, why has this problem NOT occurred during the past 2 years?  Is this particular truck crew screwing something up?).

And if it's just a matter of happenstance that cross-breezes have been thrice-in-a-row hitting the dump-out during that one moment when my barrel is upside-downed, then it's hard to believe that a wind-blocking, technological fix isn't out there.

If Ryland doesn't want to invest in that, then its crew should stop and clean up the leakage. It's fine to save labor with the truck-hoisting tech, but it's NOT fine to run design-flawed equipment that requires, cumulatively, an abhorrent increase in plastic into the waste stream (not to mention the personal expense of homeowners having to buy Hefty Bags).

I've NEVER had to buy such bags and shouldn't have to now.  And we DO want to cut down on plastic waste, right? Just because the Rylands of the world don't care, doesn't mean that waste-causing sloppiness like this should be tolerated.  Ryland Management: Fix this!

12/22/23 Update: Jon, Ryland's manager, reached out to me and we had a productive chat. He explained that it is NOT Ryland's policy to encourage "more plastic" like that, and he promised to investigate and fix what has gone wrong in my case. It's possibly a mechanical issue, and he's got on-truck video that is designed to enable him to run this problem down and fix it.

His representative should not have encouraged the "Hefty Bag Fix" and that will be addressed too.

Kudos to a manager who cares about quality; sadly, that's a vanishing breed nowadays. I will revise my rating to 5 stars once this issue is satisfactorily addressed.

4/30/24: Update. I have revised my earlier, 3-star review to 5-stars because the loose "after-trash" issue has been resolved.

They drop trash all over the roads and hwy and when you call to. Complain John Nail will tell you that he will come to your house and beat you up and that you are trash and when you call the owner to complain he responds the same way who in bacon county voted to hire this company Ooo wait no one did just alma did and this is the thugs we are now being over charged to put up with ....
